Recreation | Trinity County Highlights | Historical Background Fishing Trinity River: Known for salmon fishing from June through October and Steelhead in fall. A "fly only" section of the river is designated below Lewiston. Trinity Lake: Noted as one of the state's best bass fisheries, Trinity Lake also supports rainbow-brown trout. The county's largest body of water, Trinity (Clair Engle) Lake is located north of Weaverville on Highway 3. Lewiston Lake: A favorite of fly fisherman, Lewiston Lake's cold waters (created by monitored releases from Trinity Lake) support rainbow, brown and brook trout. Mad, Eel, Van Duzen Rivers: Located in the southern part of Trinity County, these highly regarded salmon/steelhead rivers are mainly fished in the fall and winter months. Day Hikes Stoddard/McDonald Lake Trail: Three mile hike through meadows and dense forest culminates at these two lakes. The hike is characterized by level terrain and beautiful scenery; to get there, take Highway 3 north to the gravel road, 3 miles past Coffee Creek Ranger Station. Eleanor/Shimmey Lake Trail: Easy day hike that passes by Lake Eleanor and reaches Lake Shimmey about three and a half miles from the trailhead. Swift Creek Road to Lake Eleanor Road. Granite Peak Trail: Steep, demanding trail of 4.6 miles takes the hiker to the top of Granite Peak and an incredible view. Highway 3 to Granite Peak Road (just before the Mule Creek guard station).        A hallmark of Trinity County is that throughout the 2 million acres that comprise the county, there are no traffic lights, parking meters or freeways. The bulk of the land here is in national forests and scattered throughout the mountain lakes, trails and numerous creeks and rivers, notable among these the Trinity River which was dammed in the late 50's to form Clair Engle Lake (known to the locals as Trinity Lake).      It's obvious why Trinity County has been called a recreational paradise.
